The headline interest rate is the number lenders advertise; the APR is the number you should compare. This guide explains each component of a personal loan’s cost and shows, with simple examples, how rate, term and fees combine.

Interest rate vs APR

The interest rate is the yearly cost of borrowing the principal. The APR adds most mandatory fees — above all the origination fee — and expresses the total as an annual percentage. Two loans with the same interest rate can have very different APRs once fees are included, which is why regulators require lenders to disclose APR.

Origination fees

Many online lenders charge 1–10% of the loan amount, deducted before the money reaches your account. Borrow $10,000 with a 5% fee and you receive $9,500 but repay interest on $10,000. If you need the full amount, you must borrow more. Banks and credit unions more often charge no origination fee.

Late, returned-payment and prepayment fees

Fee Typical range How to avoid it
Late payment $15–$40 or a percentage Set up autopay; many lenders also give a small rate discount for it
Returned payment $15–$35 Keep a buffer in the linked account
Prepayment penalty Rare; up to a few months’ interest Choose a lender that states ‘no prepayment penalty’
Payment by card or phone $5–$15 Pay by bank transfer

How term length changes total cost

$8,000 at 12% APR Monthly payment Total interest
2 years $377 $1,038
4 years $211 $2,112
6 years $156 $3,261

Rounded illustrative figures. A longer term lowers the payment but roughly triples the interest here.

Calculating total cost yourself

Total cost formula
  • Total repaid = monthly payment × number of months
  • Add any fees deducted up front or charged separately
  • Subtract the amount you actually received
  • The difference is the true cost of the loan

Frequently asked questions

Is a lower monthly payment always better?
No. A lower payment usually means a longer term and more total interest. Compare total repayment for the same term, then choose the shortest term you can afford.
Why is my APR higher than the advertised rate?
Advertised rates are usually the lowest available to the strongest applicants. Your rate reflects your credit profile, income and the loan amount and term.
Are fixed-rate personal loans better than variable?
For most borrowers a fixed rate is preferable because the payment cannot rise. Variable-rate personal loans are uncommon and suit only short terms.
