When the need is a few hundred dollars for a short time, the cheapest personal loans are often unavailable: many lenders set a $1,000 or $2,000 minimum. This gap is where payday lenders operate, and where several safer alternatives now exist. This guide compares them.

The options side by side

Bank small-dollar loans

A growing number of banks let existing checking customers borrow roughly $100 to $1,000 inside the app, with a decision in minutes based on account history rather than a full credit application. Repayment is typically three equal monthly instalments for a flat fee. The annualised rate is still high compared with a standard personal loan, but far below payday pricing, and the loan cannot roll over.

Credit union payday alternative loans

Federal credit unions may offer PALs of about $200 to $2,000 with a regulated APR cap and a limited application fee, repaid over one to twelve months. You generally need to be a member, sometimes for at least a month. Our credit union guide explains membership and rate caps.

Why payday loans are the last resort

The payday loan problem
  • Fees of $15–$30 per $100 for two weeks equal APRs of 300–700%
  • Repayment is a single lump sum on payday, which many borrowers cannot meet
  • Rolling over adds a new fee each cycle; most payday revenue comes from repeat borrowers
  • Some states ban or cap them; online lenders may not be licensed where you live

Before you borrow a small amount

📞
Ask the biller for a payment plan
Utilities, hospitals and landlords often agree to split a bill.
🏦
Check your own bank’s app
Small-dollar loans and fee-free overdraft buffers are often there already.
💰
Consider a paycheck advance
Some employers and payroll apps advance earned wages at low or no cost.
📋
Compare total fee in dollars
On small, short loans the dollar fee is clearer than APR.

Frequently asked questions

Is a small-dollar bank loan a payday loan?
No. It is repaid in instalments over about three months, costs a fraction of a payday loan and cannot be rolled over. It is offered only to existing customers.
Will a small-dollar loan affect my credit score?
Some banks report repayment to credit bureaus, which can help your history if you pay on time; others do not report at all. Check the terms.
What if I cannot repay a payday loan?
Contact the lender and ask about an extended payment plan, which some states require them to offer. Avoid taking a second payday loan to repay the first.
